Sometimes it can feel as if God’s law is leading us to a life of sadness and failure. It can seem like the opposite thing we want to do to get what we want. This line of thinking is absolutely not true and is from the devil. God tells us the truth of the matter in the book of Romans.

Romans 8:5–8 says:

“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the sprirt set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”

God tells us that if we live according to the Spirit, we set our minds to the things of the Spirit and it is life and peace. The mind set on the flesh however is death. We need to set our minds to the things of the Spirit and submit to Gods law for it is life and peace. We can not please God if we are living in the flesh. If we live according to the flesh we will focus not on what God wants but on our selves. We will not love others but we will only love ourselves. We will think of ourselves before we think about anyone else. We will rank other things as more important than God. If we live according to the Spirit God will be ranked as the most important in our lives and we will love others beyond measure as Christ loves us. We will strive to be strong men and women of God and follow his law for we know that it is good.

We need to bring God to the top of our priority list. We need to set our minds on the things of the Spirit so that we may have life and peace. Here are some practical examples you could try to continue to put your mind on the things of the Spirit.

Pray often

This will be a good reminder of who God is and what he has done for you.

Challenge yourself in loving others

Think you could do a better job at loving someone? Challenge yourself to it. Take care of the poor without anyone else knowing. Give your time to a friend even though you could have used that time for relaxing or having fun. Visit someone in the hospital. Spend some time with Children that are in your life. Write a note to someone who might need it. Pay for someones meal or whatever else they are buying. Do something a little extra that you do not normally do.

Sing praise to the Lord

Again, it is a good reminder of what the Lord has done and who he is.

Repent of sin

This is hard but very essential to a life lived in the Spirit. Be specific when you repent of what you are repenting of.

Get rid of things that won’t help you grow closer to God

Does TV distract you from Godly things, does it help you run towards God or does it hold you back? What about social media? You tube? Video games? Certain books? Friends? Working out? Work? Money?

Meditate on God’s word

Do not only just read His word but think about it through out your day.
